EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

“Book” Learning:

In addition to a bachelors degree in English and Communication Arts and Sciences, I have a teaching degree and a masters degree in Counselor Education: Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling from Western Michigan University. I have completed Level 3 of Gottman Method Couples Therapy. I am also a certified Prepare and Enrich Facilitator, SYMBIS Facilitator, Gottman BBH Educator, and Gottman Seven Principles Leader.

“Life” Learning

While formal education and learning from experts is extremely important, I also know the value of life experiences and how these have equipped me as a counselor and therapist.

Cheryl Cooper Counseling - My Education

Work History

I started my professional career as an educator, working with both younger children and high school students as an English and Drama teacher. I recall watching kids and their parents struggle and wishing I could do more to help, but with 150 students, my time was very limited and I could not give them the 1-on-1 time and personal attention they needed. This is part of what drew me to counseling. I can now make a difference at a much deeper level.

Cheryl Cooper Marriage Counseling

Marriage

I’ve been married for nearly 30 years now, giving me firsthand knowledge of the various stages couples go through. Marriage is hard work, with many “bumps” along the way. It can be like a roller coaster ride, really, with many highs and lows. I want to help couples not just survive marriage, but thrive and enjoy the ride together.

Cheryl Cooper Parental Counseling

Parenting

I’ve raised three children as well as a foster refugee son who came to us as a teen. How I wished they’d each come with their own “owner’s manual,” giving me insights into their unique needs, struggles, gifts and passions. While there are general principals and guidelines that apply to most children, each child creates different parenting challenges. Their “manuals” require customization. Parents with more than one child quickly learn that what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another.

My formal education, life experiences, and natural abilities help me to be flexible and caring while also challenging clients in positive and encouraging ways. I love to help clients with creative problem-solving and to experience healthier, happier, and more vital relationships.
